In the Beginning
In 1881, the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway (C&O) extended its rail lines from Richmond to Newport News. Coal exports from Newport News, Virginia began and continue to be a significant part of the city’s economy now for more than 140 years.
The coal piers in Newport News played a significant role in exporting coal from the Appalachian coalfields, particularly from West Virginia, to domestic and international markets since Newport News had a natural deepwater harbor. High quality bituminous coal was the motivation for Chesapeake & Ohio Railway (C & O) originally building the line and the current owner CSX Transportation continues, day and night, to deliver coal to be loaded onto ships destined for ports worldwide.
100 Years Later…
Our Story
In 1982, Dominion Terminal Associates was built as a joint venture partnership. DTA was designed to be a state-of-the-art coal shipping and storage facility, catering to the growing demand for coal exports. DTA was strategically located on the East Coast of the United States, providing easy access to international markets. The first coal was handled in early 1984.
Today, DTA is currently owned by Alpha Metallurgical Resources, Inc. and Arch Resources, Inc.
Over the years, several expansions and upgrades to enhance its coal handling capabilities have been implemented at DTA. These improvements aimed to increase efficiency and accommodate larger vessels, making it one of the most modern coal export facilities on the East Coast.
The current footprint is roughly 100 acres. While the coal market has fluctuated, DTA has annually shipped an average of over 12 million tons since 2008.
DTA prides itself on its efficient, high-speed coal handling systems. It has integrated advanced technology for coal sampling and blending, ensuring the consistent quality of coal products. This efficiency has made DTA a preferred choice for coal companies looking to export their products. DTA plays a significant role in the coal export industry, particularly in supplying metallurgical coal used in steel production. It served customers internationally, contributing to the economic activity of the Newport News region and the broader coal industry.
Because of its operating efficiency and customer friendly attitude, DTA is widely held to be one of the best places on Earth to load a vessel with coal. Tremendous credit is due to DTA’s employees who work tirelessly year after year to establish this worldwide reputation.
